The reasons that attorneys elect to do contract work are, simply put, numerous. Many attorneys would say that the reason that they choose to do contract work is because it is a logical means of supplementing their income. However, the attorneys that make the best contract attorneys, are those that do contract work because they love the law and find what they do inspiring and/or challenging. In fact, those same attorneys would say that if they did not have to make a living and pay bills, they would likely relish doing contract work for free. More seasoned attorneys would generally admit that they like to do contract work as a means of keeping busy, feeling productive, keeping up on changes in the law and keeping their minds sharp. While routinely shunned for full-time employment opportunities, because of their age or years practicing law, these same seasoned attorneys, while generally not interested in working in a full-time capacity, very much enjoy working in a part-time or project capacity. Many attorneys that choose to do contract work, do so because they enjoy being a part of a team, enjoy working on a challenging case or project and prefer focusing on a single project versus having to deal with all the distractions that they previously encountered as a full-time practicing attorney. Then there are the group of younger attorneys that have decided to start their own practice and elect to do contract work to keep busy and keep a steady stream of income coming in to help cover the rent, etc., while they build their practice. In short, as stated at the outset, the reasons attorneys choose to work as a contract attorney vary.
